———-

Following is some of the initial thinking in our process

Mission

Equipping local congregations to share the transforming love of Messiah Jesus with their Jewish friends and neighbors.

Primary Objective

Reach the 2,000,000 Jewish people in medium and small U.S. cities, who have little or no sustained Gospel ministry, with the news of their Messiah in a sensitive and effective way through a network of trained, local congregations.

Secondary Objectives

1) Make available to any local church training in the Jewish roots of their faith and study tours to Israel that

will spiritually deepen their people.

2) Support CMJ work in Israel through regular presentation of that work to constituent congregations of CMJ-USA.

Operating Guidelines

·        Although we will happily serve individuals committed to any of our goals, the emphasis will be on developing knowledge and skills in local congregations for the work of Gospel ministry among Jewish people and the deepening of their Christian faith.

·        Although we have a ‘natural’ constituency among evangelical Anglicans, our work will be ecumenical by design. The ultimate objective for any city outreach is a consortium of Christian congregations, working in a sustained partnership, to reach Jewish people in their city with news of their Messiah.

‘Product’ Development. For the Co-laborer work we will use a progressive program of teaching and training that equips congregations to reach their neighbors and eventually become catalytic leaders in that outreach with other congregations. At this point we think that involves three tracks of teaching/training. Material from these tracks can be ‘re-packaged’ for use with Partner and Friend congregations.

1.     Developing a Jewish understanding of the Bible and Christian discipleship through extensive Jewish roots teaching. This is for the dual purpose of authentically relating to Jewish people and being better followers of Jesus. This, when possible, involves a visit to Israel to enrich biblical study and understanding.

2.     Training and practice in the process of sharing with friends and acquaintances the news that Jesus is the Messiah, sent by God for Jewish people first, and then the nations, not for the purpose of establishing a Gentile religion.

3.     Modifying the life of the congregation so that it is more rather than less welcoming to Jewish people. This is the most experimental track, and involves a combination of special services (Feasts, Shabbat), style of services, greater emphasis on home worship and teaching, and targeted small groups.

TLO: Growing a Volunteer Team Ministry will be hosted on-line on Jan 14, 9-11. Karen Koegler, Director of Volunteer Equipping at St. Peter, Arlington Heights, IL is the guest presenter. This will be an excellent presentation for all who work to gather volunteers for committees, classrooms, and in every area of congregational life. Check the website to sign up.

Churches Planting Churches Seminar

The most effective way to reach unchurched people is through new church plants. Churches Planting Churches, January 27-28, 2012 in Arbutus, MD is a seminar designed to help your church understand the power and advantage of planting a church out of your existing church. The seminar addresses practical questions, fears, and myths about birthing a new church. The Senior Pastor and several lay leaders from your congregation should plan to attend this fun and engaging seminar lead by Rev. Michael Ruhl, Director of Training at the Center for U.S. Missions, and Rev. Glenn A. Lucas, Executive Director for Mission Development in Southeastern District.

Family Friendly Partner Network
The first informational meeting for the development of a family friendly partner network will be held at Our Savior, Laurel MD on Sat. Feb 11. The FFPN exists to train and equip churches to partner with homes to strengthen and pass on faith in Jesus Christ to the third and fourth generation. Contact Dr. Joel Dietrich, DCE, Prince of Peace, Springfield VA for additional info.

Ablaze Goal: 2.5 million faith-sharing contacts

Take a moment to check in and share your stories or let us know that you have shared the Gospel of Jesus with another. The Ablaze Task Force set a goal for 750,000 contacts by the 2012 SED Convention. Your work in telling others about who God is and the relationship have has surpassed that goal. Thank you. Now at more than 853,000 recorded faith sharing moments – can we make it to 1 million by Convention?

How have you shared the Good News of Jesus today?   Send stories and pictures so that we may all grow from one another’s experiences. If you don’t have time to share a story on line, send the number of contacts you have made during these past weeks.

January Prayer for SED Convention Preparation

We thank You, loving Father, for our sisters and brothers in Christ who are working on our behalf, both behind the scenes and in the forefront of the convention. In particular, we pray for President Jon
Diefenthaler, his staff, the Convention Committee, those who will serve on floor committees, and all
delegates. Bless their efforts for Your glory and for the good of Your Body, the Church. Give them
wisdom, strength, health, patience, and joy in their service. May your Spirit renew and refresh them.
We thank You for their willing hearts and their faithfulness to You. Bless the work of the “preconvention meetings” that will take place throughout our District this month. May they inform, inspire and unify us in our common vision for mission. We also pray for those who will serve us at the hotel and in the surrounding Virginia Beach community, especially those who may not know You as Savior and Lord. May the words and actions of all who participate in the Convention convey appreciation, grace, and kindness. Provide opportunities and give us the courage to share Good News of Your love with them. In the precious name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

SED Christmas Blessings

January 4th, 2012 by lucasjs

The Sunday School Christmas rehearsal was finished and as the children were preparing to go home, Mary and Joseph lingered at the manger. “How do you think God wants us to come to the manger?” Mary asked Joseph. He responded “Perhaps we should kneel.” “And fold our hands,” said Mary. “Let’s practice,” Joseph replied. There they were, kneeling at the manger with hands folded and heads bowed. With great seriousness, Mary asked: “Will this make God smile?”

May your gatherings in these next days and hours, readied by the preparations of the Advent season to kneel at the manger of Jesus, be filled with moments of quiet awe and joyful thanksgiving. May the lessons and carols of this season fill your hearts as you come to adore Him who comes to be the witness of the eternal love of God, to show God’s unending mercy for all people, and to bring us to life together as family.

From all of us at the Southeastern District, Merry Christmas.

A stewardship lesson for children of Risen Christ Lutheran Church and School, Myrtle Beach, SC

Celebrating 35 years of Ministry, under the theme Accomplish…. Imagine, Children at Risen Christ Lutheran Church and School Myrtle Beach were engaged in a special tithing lesson. Pastor Kassouf asked the Day School and Sunday School children to bring back 1 piece of candy for every 10 that they were given during any “trick or treat” time. The donated candy was collected and given to children less fortunate through North Strand Helping Hands.  The chapel talks were focused on God’s love for the cheerful giver and the idea that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (2 Cor. 9:7, Matt 6:21, Luke 12:34).  Two boys brought in 100% of what they collected, some brought in 20, 30 and 40 percent of the candy they collected.  Much of the candy represented “the best” candy of all the students collected.  Children saw their chocolate gifts multiplied by the Lord as the quantity collected was much larger than any child could have imagined.  In the same way the Lord multiplies the gifts we bring on Sunday or to school chapel.

To conclude the program, each child was given a cardboard bank  by their congregation LCEF representative.  The bank, urges and reminds children to divide their funds as follows, 10% to give to the Lord’s work, 10% for long term savings and 80% to use as they wanted/need to.

LHF offers free resources for Chinese ministry
In every state, in every city, there are people for whom Chinese is their first language. More than 2 million Chinese currently live in the United States, making them the third largest immigrant group in the country.

Most Chinese come from Buddhist backgrounds; many practice some form of ancestor worship. The Lutheran Heritage Foundation (LHF) has produced three new catechisms that can help explain the Lutheran faith to our Chinese neighbors: a pocket-sized edition; the complete Luther’s Small Catechism with Explanation; and a revised version of the Chinese-English. This book also helps Chinese who are learning English to practice the language while learning the principles of the faith.

To order Chinese catechisms, call the LHF office at (800)554-0723 . As always, there is no charge for the books. For those who are able, a gift to LHF of $5-10 per book helps defray the costs of shipping and allows LHF to continue its work around the world.

 ’Tis the Season of Hope
Refugee childYear end is a time to cherish and celebrate loved ones and traditions we hold dear. As I reflect on the year, I am humbled by the neighbors we serve and grateful for the embrace of the community around us.

There is much for which to be thankful as the year winds to a close here at Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSS/NCA)!  Thank you for helping us…

  • Celebrate an amazing World Refugee Day that honored the talents and cultures of refugees who have recently resettled in our community
  • Expand support to families affected by HIV/AIDS by adding family programs to Youth Haven, increasing participation by 244%
  • Find employment (even in a lagging jobs market) for 90% of arriving refugees
  • Implement new and enhanced support systems for foster parents
  • Have the most LSS/NCA walkers ever in the Help the Homeless Walk
  • Launch the Lutheran Asset Map Project (LAMP) that will electronically show services provided throughout the region
  • Host more than 100 people through Compassion in Action tours

As I look toward 2012, there is much work to do and we’re so glad you will be there with us. Here are just two exciting projects:

  • The launch of Support U – an education and referral resource for families who take on caring for a sick or aging loved one.
  • The Compassion in Action tours were such a hit in 2011 that we are continuing them in 2012. They provide a way to experience LSS/NCA’s mission and to learn more about how our programs impact lives. If you haven’t experienced Compassion in Action, please join us and be inspired. Dates are regularly updated on our website.

Dear partners in mission,

Just the other day, a cashier in a local store completed the transaction with “Happy Holidays”. I turned back and responded; “Merry Christmas”. You won’t hear “Happy Holidays” from me because I want to take every opportunity to speak His name and so “Merry Christmas”. It is His season and so we should with great joy proclaim it and use every opportunity to help point people to this child who grew up to be the Savior of the world.

I am giving thanks to God for the new missions that have taken off and are proclaiming this message to people who have not heard or who do not have a lasting relationship with the Lord.  On Christmas Eve, Jordan Lutheran will hold their services in a movie theater. As moviegoers pass through the lobby, they will see the signs of the worshipping community and hear the sounds of people in worship – to God. It may just be that a heart or two will be turned or a seed planted, that is my prayer.

In the city of Baltimore, Missionary Falak Robson is speaking to everyday people who work in the malls, car repair centers, and food courts about the Good News of Jesus and lives are changing, people are praying and seeking to know Jesus in a personal way. I give thanks to God for the missionaries, mission planters, and pastors who are leading the way in proclaiming the Gospel.

I give thanks to God for you and your commitment to making it possible for others to know the real meaning of Christmas as together we partner to develop and nurture new mission growth in the Southeastern District, especially through the Ablaze! for God’s Mission effort. Your gifts have made a difference and are continuing to make a difference in the lives of people – everyday people – the people for whom Christ was born. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Praise God for the generous hearts of all who are supporting this mission effort. Of the funding being contributed directly through the Ablaze! for God’s Mission in partnership with Fan Into Flame, we are 80% fulfilled as of the end of the third quarter. There is less than $850,000 to be received towards a total goal campaign of $6,042,415. Thank you.

St. John’s member, Ibrahim Soliman, a native of Cairo, Egypt, has accepted the role of mission leader, and is already serving in this capacity.  Our goal is to equip Ibrahim through the Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology (EIIT) to carry out this mission task even more effectively. Circuits 9 provided a grant of $12,000 to help move this mission forward.

Growing a Volunteer Team

January 14, 2012, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

We ask our people to be good stewards of their time and talents. How well are we as church staff and leaders doing at being a good steward of the time and talents they give to the church? The answer to this question is related to the more-frequently-asked question, “Why don’t we have enough volunteers?” The session covered in this web-conference are ones that help people serve. When we help each other serve, we are being good stewards of each other’s time and talents.

This is an excellent session for all leaders of teams: Ushers, Visitation, Choir, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Nursery Personnel, Buildings and Grounds…invite your leaders to join us on Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 9-11.

Karen Kogler, Director of Volunteer Equipping at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights IL, is the web-conference speaker. She brings many years of experience of working with, motivating, and encouraging volunteers to this presentation.

This webconference will be broadcast live to members of the SED.

There is no fee for this workshop but participants will need to register for both the live site and the webcast.  Registration information

If you have questions about connecting to the webcast please contact Cathy Long. Instructions with a link to connect to the webcast will be emailed on to registered participants on Thursday, November 3.

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ. Colossians 4: 2-3.
Dear Mission Prayer Partners,
In just a few days we will be in the midst of all the music, lessons, and messages of Christmas. Indeed God comes to us, knowing that on our own we could never make it back to him. This action of great love changes my life-daily. It is not only about the eternal life I will have with Him one day, it is also about the grace and hope that I get to live in each day. It is for today and tomorrow that we want people to know Jesus and grow in their relationship with Him. In these next days, we will have unprecedented opportunities to share Jesus with people who hunger for what he has to offer. Let us pray for all who do not know, do not celebrate life with Jesus that they will hear and their lives will be turned to Him. Let us pray that God’s Holy Spirit will move each of us to be bold witnesses.

As we enter these days of Christmas, I invite you to join with me in praying for the emerging mission fields, that the Holy Spirit will stir hearts and open the doors of opportunity for connecting people with Christ.

LINC, Washington DC: an inner-city outreach effort to strengthen local mission and to development new opportunities to reach people who live and work in Washington DC.

Child Development Center, Emmanuel, Hampton VA: Reaching the community through their children is an excellent form of outreach. Emmanuel continues to work forward in preparing to begin outreach through a Child Development Center.

Dulles South, Dulles VA: The Dulles South mission committee will be issuing a Divine Call to a Mission Planter in the very near future. We pray for discernment as they continue this process.

Galilee, Pasadena MD: Is preparing to add to their staff in order to reach new people for Christ.

As always, thank you for your mission prayer partnership. Your ongoing prayers are doing much to resource this new mission work. Through this support, lives are turning to Jesus as new opportunities to connect people with Christ are available.

Merry Christmas,

Sally

December Prayer for the Southeastern District Convention

Almighty and gracious God, our heavenly Father, we give thanks that You send faithful laborers into Your Vineyard. Help us to nominate pastors who walk closely with You, are of good repute, and willing to faithfully serve You as they work within our congregations. Grant that through the labors of these Your servants Your Church may be nourished, enriched, guided, and sustained in the Word of God and built up into Him who is the head of the Church, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

10:02 am Prayers for the Harvest and Workers
Don’t forget to set your cell phones alarm/alert to 10:02 a.m. and pray for the Harvest and Workers. Luke 10:2 Jesus told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
